Dear Neighbor—First and foremost, I just want to say that my thoughts, prayers and actions are with those in the Muskegon and Muskegon Heights area who were hit so hard by the storm last week. I’ve been in close contact with our elected officials out there and will be visiting ASAP next week. If there’s anything my office can do, don’t hesitate to reach out. We had a real action-packed week in DC, and I was so glad to have my family by my side as I navigated it. I took some big votes, questioned the Secretary of Transportation and participated in two great bipartisan events for a great cause and met with some VIP constituents (see photos below). My family learned to give a GREAT Capitol tour—so come and visit when we’re out here and they’d love to show ya around. Keep reading for a great recap of the week below, and one of the week ahead.

We were so excited to welcome Mylie, the winner of MI-03's annual art competition. Come out to Washington, DC to see Mylie's artwork displayed in the halls of the Capitol!

We also welcomed Boy Scouts Troop 345G – the second largest Boy Scout Troop of girls in Michigan! I loved meeting them and look forward to meeting with even more school groups and scout trips in the weeks ahead.

The week in review

Legislative Work

There were three appropriations bills on the Floor this week, all weighed down with poison pills that would not make our nation safer or our border more secure. It is my hope that we can come together with the Senate to craft bipartisan compromises that put the needs of our neighbors first.

I also cosponsored 2 bills and signed onto one letter. This is a letter urging the Department of Education to address impacts of FAFSA formula changes and delays on continuing students with family farms. This is an issue I’ve discussed with West Michigan farmers, and I’m glad to support these families as they keep food on our tables.

Committee Work

We gave a warm Michigan welcome to the Secretary of Transportation when he came to testify before the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.

Secretary Buttigieg

Once the hearing started it was all business as I questioned him on two critical issues facing West Michigan transportation—the enforcement of Essential Air Standards at the Muskegon Airport, where a change in the failing service provider is desperately needed, and about truck parking safety.

Did you know that nearly 1 in 15 jobs in Michigan is considered a trucking job?

Think about that.

Our truckers are essential to our economy and yet lack reliable access to safe parking when delivering their load. I’m proud to cosponsor the bipartisan Truck Parking Safety Improvement Act to help change that. You can watch me question Secretary Buttigieg here.

In SBC, the Republican majority held a "Hearing Reviewing the Committee’s Investigation into Online Censorship of Small Businesses." I just need to be honest – it was terribly unserious. This committee started with such promise, but has recently devolved into a partisan witch hunt. It’s no laughing matter.

The losers here are the small business owners of America, who need us conducting serious hearings on serious topics facing American Small businesses. I won’t stop working to do just that.

Showing Up with Action

[not] Just for Fun

I’m always looking for some wholesome, useful ways to spend my time after votes in DC, and my faithful readers know that I love to join in any bipartisan efforts, especially for a good cause.

Well, this year, two of my big events coincided in the same week. First up, the Congressional Women’s Softball Game where we raised nearly a million dollars for the Young Survival Coalition—a group that supports young breast cancer survivors around the country. Republicans and Democrats team up to play the press. Sadly, we didn’t bring home the W, but we had fun and raised money for a great cause in the process.

The second was the annual Members v. Press Congressional Spelling Bee at the National Press Club. This event is judged by the official announcer AND the winner of the Scripps National Spelling Bee. We help to raise money for the Spelling Bee and independent journalism in the US and around the world. My kids LOVED meeting 2024 Scripps winner Bruhat Soma – I think they got more nervous for my turn spelling than I did. I did better than last year, advancing through 5 rounds and claiming the title of last woman standing on Team Congress!!

ICYMI

  • Muskegon County declared a state of emergency following last week’s storms – I’ll be visiting ASAP next week when I’m back home
  • If you’re anything like me, you love seeing the Grand Rapids Police Department’s K9s out on the job. There’s a new effort underway to purchase police vests and keep them safe on the job!
  • Congrats to Grand Haven’s Seth Norder for being named Michigan’s 2024 Gatorade Player of the Year!

Week in Preview

Next week I’m home doing my favorite work—district work. Whether heart wrenching or uplifting, there’s no place I’d rather be than right at home learning from you all how I can best represent you. I’ll be visiting storm damage on the Lakeshore, talking to the National Weather Service about their state of the art storm forecasting models, catching up with the Urban League on their latest work, and visiting a number of other small businesses. It’ll be a short, but full week and I hope to see many of you out and about celebrating the 4th of July!!

Sincerely,

HJS
