Dear Neighbors – I’m suspending my typical newsletter and sending some thoughts for a difficult time. I write to you with a heavy heart, in the wake of yesterday’s events – an assassination attempt on a former president and current presidential candidate. This is not who we are as a nation, and yet, undeniably, here we are. We must take stock of how we got here and chart a new path forward. I’m all in. I want you to know that as soon as I learned the news yesterday, I checked in on my Republican colleagues and friends, especially those in attendance at the rally in Pennsylvania. One member I work with closely on the Small Business Committee was in the front row as the shots struck. I want you to know that I expressed our support and sent our love from West Michigan. They were so grateful. I also put out a statement last night, condemning the violence, thanking law enforcement for their quick response, and sending prayers for the victims and their families, including former President Trump.

Dear Neighbors –

I’m suspending my typical newsletter and sending some thoughts for a difficult time. Congresswoman Scholten at Wreath Laying Ceremony for President Gerald R. Ford

This morning, I had the opportunity to attend a wreath-laying ceremony in honor of President Gerald R. Ford, marking the occasion of what would have been his 110th birthday. How timely. Ford’s legacy is one of civility, integrity, and bipartisan service. It was helpful to reflect on the past, take a lesson from his life, and focus on the future. We were joined by our local Grand Rapids Boy Scout Troop, including two of the first Black young women Boy Scouts EVER in the United States of America. As I watched these young men and women lay their tributary flowers, I felt an incredible sense of peace and hope for the future.

We concluded our ceremony by reflecting on this timely quote from President Ford, delivered in 1975 before a group of our international allies gathered at the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe:

“We are bound together by the most powerful of all ties, our fervent love for freedom and independence, which knows no homeland but the human heart.”

It’s an honor to serve you, West Michigan.

Sincerely,
